11 Oct Success: A Mindset
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our Light, not our Darkness, that most frightens us.” – Marianne Williamson
Most of us are looking for growth in nearly every aspect of our lives. But what has the most impact on our success? There are many conflicting belief systems that dictate the end result. Is it our hard work and determination? Is it our effort that pays off in the end? Or is it our innate talent that determines our overall success? The answer has been proven time and time again. Success: A Mindset.
In the end, it is our mindset that plays the largest role in determining our outcome for success. This means, of course, that we can’t play the blame game. We are the ones who determine whether or not we grow. We are all actively creating the experiences we have (whether we are conscious of it or not) through our habitual thoughts and belief systems.
Although we can’t underestimate the value of hard work and talent, it can feel daunting to strive for success within these limited confines. These can become limiting factors because without the right mindset, we are unable to use them constructively. The key to success is creating a mindset of success.
All truly successful people know there is no such thing as ‘failure.’ There is simply the experience and the opportunity to learn from it. When we are working from this mindset, we are then able to grow our capacity. It’s important to look for the underlying beliefs that operate in our subconscious, for this is a pathway to great freedom.
We must ritualize creating a mindset of success. Then, it becomes part of our daily routine and eventually we don’t even realize we are doing it any longer. Here are a few thoughts and ideas to ponder to help you shift in the right direction:
1. If you don’t believe you deserve to be successful, you won’t be.
Our beliefs and thought systems are consistently influencing our behavior. Then, we experience the effects of our behavior. Take a deep look at what underlying thought systems and habitual patterns are governing your life and, therefore, your success. You are not a victim of your circumstances. You are capable of transforming what you see. Don’t be a prisoner in your environment and don’t let your situation determine your attitude and mindset. Let your mindset determine your situation.
2. Grit is essential in shifting to the mindset of success paradigm.
Winston Churchill once said, “Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.” We see successful people do this all the time. To be a successful professional baseball player, you are going to ‘fail’ at bat two-thirds of the time. The key to their success is that they never let it get to them. They strike out twice and hit a home run the third time at bat. In fact, psychologist Angela Duckworth’s book, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, scientifically outlines that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a special blend of passion and persistence she calls “grit.”
3. Adopt a mindfulness practice.
Success and failure are choices made consciously and subconsciously and failure is chosen by many for various reasons. When we are able to stay present with what is happening now in our lives, we begin to transcend negative thoughts about the past and anxiety related to the future. This type of practice helps builds a powerful and conscious mindset that is alert to the present moment.
4. Build relationships with people who have a mindset of success.
There is an old saying, “It takes ones to know one.” If you can identify people in your power circle that are living with a mindset of success, there is that same seed inside you that is waiting to be watered and nurtured. The following quote from the Law of Attraction says it all: “we need people in our lives who raise our standards, remind us of our essential purpose and challenge us to become the best version of ourselves.”
5. Defining your desires enables you to manifest your success.
All too often, we are unsure of what we truly want. This is about envisioning and outlining the specifics of your emotional desires. Take 5 minutes out of your day to sit quietly and allow whatever visions you have come to you. After the five minutes are up, write down everything you can remember. This will encourage your mind to manifest your desires. Walter H. Jackson, in “Visualize like an Athlete” astutely acknowledges:
“There is nothing new or unusual about using the mind and emotions as tools of consciously creating our reality. As we become aware and begin to eliminate negative visualization from our daily lives, we can begin to think and act in healthy, positive, affirming ways.”
Whether you know it or not, you are actively creating your experience. The mindset of success becomes more thoroughly bound in our conscious awareness when we can identify exactly what it is that we want.
6. Develop success habits.
Finally, let go of anything that is no longer serving you. When we hold on to what we remember as failures in our past or worries about our future, we leave no room to change the habitual patterns that are governing our lives. Take a good look at your life and the habits that are holding you back – below are some success habits you can start implementing immediately:
Express gratitude:
When we are grateful for something or someone in our life, we are essentially healing any negative mindset we were carrying with us as it may have related to that thing or person.
Be curious:
If we are inquisitive about the power of our minds and the effects they hold over the experiences we have, we will inevitably shape our mindset to produce the results we want rather than the ones we are unconsciously, habitually creating.
Solutions-oriented:
Decisions come easy and quickly to us when we are in the mindset of success. Make it a habit to focus your attention on what can work instead of mulling over all the ways it may not.
Affirm yourself:
Repetition is vital in the beginning stages of shifting your mindset. Eventually, we will do this without effort, but at the start it is important to remind ourselves of the power we hold in our minds. Put a post-it on your bathroom mirror each week with an affirmation that relates to the desires completed in step 5.
Essentially, we must remember that our mindset determines what we experience and how we perform.
We need to get clear on what we want and treat every seemingly “failure” as an opportunity for growth. Effort, time, and consistency have to be involved when we are consciously creating a mindset of success. We must make it a priority to spend time every day nurturing our intentions to transform into and maintain a mindset of success. Then, it becomes second nature.
